When the Storms Come: Finding Peace in the Midst of Life’s Chaos
In this powerful sermon from Dr. Rob White of the Athens Universal Life Church, we are reminded that storms—both literal and metaphorical—are an inevitable part of life. Drawing from Matthew 14:22–33, the message centers on the moment when Jesus walks on water to reach his disciples, who are struggling in a boat amid a fierce storm. Peter’s attempt to walk toward Jesus, only to falter and sink, becomes a vivid illustration of human vulnerability and divine grace.
Dr. White reflects on how fear often accompanies new experiences, much like learning to walk or ride a bike. These moments of uncertainty mirror the disciples’ fear when they saw Jesus walking on the sea. Yet, Jesus’s words—“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”—offer comfort and assurance that we are never alone, even in our darkest hours.
The sermon also explores how hardship can later be remembered with gratitude, as seen in stories from the London Blitz and the Great Depression. These reflections serve to highlight the transformative power of faith and community during trials.
A poignant quote from theologian C.E.B. Cranfield encapsulates the heart of the message: “If it is a result of obedience to Christ’s command that the church or the individual Christian is in a situation of danger or distress, then there is no need to fear.” This sentiment is echoed in the wisdom of Mother Teresa, who advised Henri Nouwen to spend time in contemplative prayer and avoid wrongdoing—simple yet profound guidance for navigating life’s storms.
Ultimately, Dr. White encourages us to invite Jesus into our hearts. While following Christ doesn’t guarantee a life free of problems, it does promise peace amid the chaos. When Jesus is present, the storms may not disappear, but our fear does. And by the grace of God, we will be okay.
