A Different Kind of Luncheon: A Lesson in Humble Service
In this week’s message from Dr. Rob White of Athens Universal Life Church, we explore Luke 14:1, 7-14, where Jesus shares a parable that challenges societal norms about status and humility. Jesus, dining at the home of a leading Pharisee, observes guests vying for seats of honor and offers a lesson in kingdom living:
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
This teaching overturns worldly assumptions about success and recognition. Jesus invites His followers to choose humility, placing God and others before personal ambition. In doing so, they align themselves with the values of God’s kingdom.
Dr. White draws attention to Jesus’ instruction to the host: instead of inviting influential friends who can reciprocate, open your table to those in need—the poor, the disabled, the marginalized. This radical hospitality reflects God’s grace, where blessings are not earned but freely given.
The sermon reminds us that Jesus didn’t come to endorse worldly wealth or power but to teach about eternal riches found in serving others. Dr. White shares the inspiring story of Roy Fairchild, who, while stranded and disheartened in Vienna, experienced profound kindness from a woman who had little yet shared her meal and faith. Her simple act embodied the Kingdom of God, showing that blessings come to those who give without expecting anything in return.
