“I Have Been There” – Sermon Recap

As 2024 draws to a close, many reflect on a year marked by challenges, from economic instability to natural disasters and a growing mental health crisis. In his sermon “I Have Been There,” Dr. Rob White of Athens Universal Life Church delivers a message of hope, resilience, and faith rooted in biblical wisdom.

Drawing from Romans 8:18, which reminds us that “our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us,” Dr. White connects the struggles of modern life to the enduring examples of God’s provision and presence. He parallels the challenges faced by the Israelites in the wilderness and Jesus’ trials, emphasizing that God’s faithfulness remains steadfast even in the hardest times.

Economic hardship, for instance, is a recurring theme in today’s world. Inflation and job loss create difficult decisions for families, mirroring the Israelites’ desperation in the wilderness. Yet, just as God provided manna and water for His people, He continues to work through communities and individuals to meet our needs. Dr. White encourages believers to trust in God’s plan and become His hands and feet by supporting those in need.

Similarly, the devastation caused by natural disasters serves as a reminder of God’s ever-present help. From the resilience of first responders to the rebuilding of communities, acts of kindness reflect divine intervention. Psalm 34:18 assures us that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” offering solace amid destruction.

Mental health struggles are another area where faith can shine. Dr. White highlights Jesus’ moments of anguish, such as in the Garden of Gethsemane, as proof that Christ understands our pain. The church is called to provide safe spaces for support, reminding individuals that they are never alone.

Dr. White concludes with three takeaways for navigating life’s trials: Trust in God’s plan (Jeremiah 29:11), persevere in faith (Hebrews 12:1–2), and be a light to others (Galatians 6:2). As we move into 2025, may these truths inspire us to lean on God’s unwavering faithfulness and extend His love to the world.
