Whose Wife?

The New Testament teaches resurrection––a state that will be at the same time like the life that we know––unlike the life that we know––and more wonderful than we can imagine.

In this week’s sermon titled “Whose Wife?”, Dr. Rob White delves into the challenging question posed to Jesus by the Sadducees in Luke 20:27-38. The Sadducees, who deny the resurrection, attempt to trap Jesus with a hypothetical scenario about a woman who marries seven brothers, each dying childless. Their question, “In the resurrection, whose wife will she be?” is designed to discredit the concept of resurrection.

Jesus responds by teaching that life in the resurrection will differ significantly from our earthly experience. In heaven, there will be no marriage as we know it because those who are resurrected will be like angels, unable to die and not bound by the same social structures we have on earth. Jesus further reinforces the reality of the resurrection by referencing Moses and the burning bush, where God identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—implying that these patriarchs are alive, for God is the God of the living.

Dr. White likens the Sadducees’ attempt to trap Jesus to the classic Roadrunner cartoons, where Wile E. Coyote’s schemes always backfire. Just as the Coyote never succeeds, the Sadducees find themselves ensnared by their own question, as Jesus turns their trap on its head, affirming the resurrection.

The sermon also touches on the deeper questions about what our resurrected bodies and lives will be like. Dr. White explains that while we can’t fully understand what awaits us in heaven, we know it will be a state of joy, free from the limitations and sufferings of our earthly bodies. The resurrection is central to Christian faith, promising believers a new, transformed life with Christ, where our current understanding will be eclipsed by the reality of God’s eternal plan.

As Dr. White concludes, the message of resurrection is one of hope and victory over death, a mystery we are invited to embrace through faith in Christ.
