A Daily Devotion: Finding Purpose in Adversity – Genesis Chapter 39

Scripture reference: Genesis Chapter 39

In life, we frequently encounter troubles and adversities that make our journey seem unbearable. Yet, in these trials, our character is refined, and our faith deepened. Today’s devotion is centered on the experiences of Joseph in Genesis chapter 39.

Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, yet he continued to live God-centered in a world that didn’t acknowledge God. Ironically, it was in his adversity that he discovered enormous favor with God and man. Joseph’s story is a lesson about maintaining righteous living despite unjust circumstances.

Genesis 39 tells us that God was with Joseph; He made him prosperous even when he was sold as a slave to Potipar. Despite the severity of his circumstances, Joseph held onto his faith firmly and conducted himself honorably before both God and man. His faithfulness led him to be trusted with everything Potipar owned.

However, adversity struck again when false accusations landed him in prison. Yet even there, “the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor…” (Genesis 39:21 NIV). Herein lies the key reminder for us: No matter where life takes us or what hardships we face, God is always with us.

In conclusion, Genesis chapter 39 teaches us about the unyielding faithfulness of Joseph amidst suffering—a testament to allowing God’s purpose to unfold even under adverse circumstances. Adversity can be a platform where God’s grace shines brightest—we just have to trust Him through it all. Remember that it isn’t primarily about what you’re going through but Who you’re going toward.
