Unveiling Divine Intervention – A Devotion on Genesis Chapter 19

As we reflect on Genesis 19, we are invited to journey through an intense biblical narrative, revealing God’s mercy, wrath, and divine intervention.

The chapter begins with two angels visiting Sot and warning him about the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah due to their gross immorality. Despite the city’s wickedness, Lot shows hospitality and kindness to these strangers, not knowing they were sent from God. Here we witness how compassion in a corrupt world can invite divine intervention.

Lot’s willingness to protect the angels at his own family’s risk was an act of supreme selflessness that significantly contrasts with the city’s sinful behavior. His actions didn’t go unnoticed by God; an escape plan was orchestrated just for him and his family.

However, the family’s escape was not without its pitfalls. Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom against the angel’s explicit command and immediately turned into a pillar of salt. This punishment may seem harsh, but disobedience towards God often leads to self-inflicted harm.

Genesis 19 is an emblematic reminder of divine justice- the good receiving mercy and evil facing ruin. The story reminds us that even amid turmoil, God’s love prevails for those who walk in righteousness.

We should strive in our daily lives to reflect Lot’s virtues – hospitality towards strangers, protection for those under our care, respect for God’s directives – while avoiding his wife’s fatal error: longing for past sins instead of facing forward towards a future with God.

Dear Lord,
Guide us as we navigate this worldly life filled with temptities and tribulations. Help us maintain our faith when faced with adversity. Just like you saved Lot from destruction due to his righteousness amidst wickedness in Sodom and Gomorrah, save us from our sins when we lose sight of righteousness. Encourage us to show kindness, love, and hospitality to others, just as Jesus did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
