Scripture: Mark 11:9-10 (NIV) – “Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!'”
Devotion:
As Easter draws near, we reflect on the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, as described in Mark 11:9-10. This event, often called Palm Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy Week and sets the stage for the unfolding drama of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. As we delve into these verses, we uncover profound truths about Jesus’ identity and our response to him.
“Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, ‘Hosanna!'” The word “Hosanna” is a cry of praise and adoration, meaning “Save now!” or “Save, we pray!” The people recognized Jesus as the Messiah, the promised Savior who would deliver them from oppression and establish God’s kingdom on earth.
“‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'” This declaration echoes Psalm 118:26, a Messianic prophecy that foretold the arrival of the Anointed One. The crowds acknowledged Jesus as the one sent by God, blessed and anointed to fulfill God’s redemptive purposes.
“‘Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!'” This statement reflects the people’s expectation of a restored kingdom, reminiscent of the glory days of King David’s reign. They hoped that Jesus would inaugurate a new era of peace, justice, and prosperity for God’s people.
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!” The people’s exuberant praise reached its climax with this declaration. They lifted their voices in worship and adoration, acknowledging Jesus’ rightful place as King of kings and Lord of lords.
As we prepare our hearts for Easter, let us echo the praises of the crowds on that first Palm Sunday. Let us welcome Jesus into our lives with joy and adoration, acknowledging him as our Savior and King. And let us anticipate with eager hearts the fulfillment of God’s kingdom, both now and in the age to come.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and King. As we reflect on his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we join our voices with the crowds in proclaiming “Hosanna!” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! May we welcome Jesus into our lives with joy and adoration, acknowledging him as our Savior and King. In his name, we pray. Amen.
