A Wondrous Mystery: Daily Advent Devotions

This newly released Advent devotional features thirty daily readings drawn from the powerful preaching of Charles Spurgeon. In A Wondrous Mystery, Spurgeon’s words echo with conviction and clarity as he shares his inspiring insights unpacking the glory of Christ’s incarnation, the wonder of the Lord’s sacrifice, and the eternal hope found in His resurrection.

Each day of Advent, this devotional offers a Scripture passage followed by an excerpt from a Christmas sermon. Throughout his ministry, and especially at Christmas, Spurgeon took every opportunity to proclaim the Gospel: that the Son of God became a man in order that He might be the perfect sacrifice for the salvation of sinners.

As Christmas grew into a cultural phenomenon during the time of Spurgeon’s ministry, he was steadfast in guiding his congregation away from any distraction from Gospel truth. He lived at a time when the doctrine of the incarnation was being challenged and took every opportunity to remind his listeners of the true significance of the “the Infinite becoming an infant”:

Though it is eighteen hundred years ago and more, the Christmas bells seem to ring on. The joy of his coming is still in our hearts. He lived here for two or three and thirty years, but he was sent, the text tells us, for a reason which caused him to die. He was sent for sin. … He was sent that he might be the substitute for sinners.

Spurgeon’s timeless words and passion for the Gospel have encouraged believers for generations. In the busy holiday season, this Advent devotional offers a respite and redirects hearts to stay focused on Christ.
