Have you ever met someone famous? The excitement of being in the presence of a celebrity is surreal, but as Dr. Rob White, Senior Minister of the Athens Universal Life Church, points out in his powerful sermon, When God Speaks To You, there is something far greater: for the Creator of the universe to speak directly to you. Based on John 8:47, this message reminds us that God is not silent; He still speaks to His children today, personally and directly.
Dr. White unpacks three essential truths about how God communicates. First, when God speaks, He speaks to you uniquely. God is not in the business of mass-producing spiritual experiences or offering a one-size-fits-all formula. Just as Moses experienced a unique burning bush, your encounter with God will be personal and private. We are challenged to stop waiting for a specific method or technique and start seeking a genuine relationship with the Father.
Second, when God speaks, you will know it was God. There is no ambiguity. While God is patient with our weak faith—just as He was with Gideon and his fleece—there comes a time when we must stop testing and start trusting. You don’t need to prove your experience to others; your only job is to obey.
Third, when God speaks, you will know what He said. Whether it was Noah receiving the exact measurements for the ark or Abraham being called to leave his homeland, God’s instructions are concrete. Meeting with God is not about religious rituals; it is a face-to-face, heart-to-heart relationship where He clearly communicates His will.
So, why do so many of us struggle to hear His voice? Dr. White lovingly but firmly explains that if you feel God is silent, it is not because He isn’t trying. It is because the noise of our phones, the busyness of our schedules, and the clutter of distractions are drowning Him out. To hear God, we must make lifestyle adjustments, offering Him our time, our attention, and our love.
Whether you are taking your first steps of faith in surrendering to Jesus Christ, or you are a believer needing to tune out the world’s noise and return to the secret place, God is waiting to speak. The question is not whether He is talking, but whether we are listening. Are you ready to say, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening”?
