Afraid to Witness? Overcoming the Fear of Sharing Your Faith

Have you ever felt a knot in your stomach at the thought of sharing your faith? You are not alone. In our latest sermon, “Afraid to Witness?”, Dr. Rob White explores the quiet, unspoken struggle many Christians face: the fear of evangelism. Drawing from Acts 9:10-24, we look at the story of Ananias, who was terrified when God asked him to minister to Saul of Tarsus—the very man actively persecuting Christians.

If Ananias felt afraid, it is completely normal for us to feel the same way when thinking about sharing Jesus with our friends, family, or coworkers. Witnessing requires vulnerability, and we often let the fear of rejection or the pressure to “seal the deal” paralyze us. However, the sermon highlights three transformative truths to help us push past this fear.

First, don’t forget that God has already been working. Before Ananias ever knocked on Saul’s door, God had already been preparing Saul’s heart. When we share our faith, we aren’t walking into a battlefield blind; we are stepping into a field God is already tilling. We are simply joining Him in what He is already doing.

Second, remember that God has a plan for everyone. Ananias saw Saul as a dangerous menace, but God saw a future missionary who would write half of the New Testament. We may not know how God will use the people in our lives, but it is our job to be the messengers and leave the results to Him.

Finally, we must redefine success. Success in witnessing isn’t about getting an immediate “yes.” Success is simply being obedient to share the Good News. You plant the seed, but God gives the increase.

This week, the challenge is simple: pick one person God has laid on your heart and have a conversation about Jesus. You don’t need a fancy outline or eloquent words; just tell them what Jesus has done for you. Push past the awkwardness and the excuses, because someone’s eternity might hang in the balance. Lay your fears at the altar today and ask God to make you an Ananias in someone else’s story.
