In a world that is constantly screaming for attention, how do we as believers stand out in a way that truly matters? In the opening message of our new series, “City On A Hill,” Dr. Rob White explores Matthew 5:13-16 to uncover our divine identity as “Salt and Light.” While the modern world begs for “likes” and “shares,” Jesus calls us to a different kind of prominence—one that doesn’t point to ourselves, but reflects the beauty of our Father.
Dr. White breaks down this calling into three powerful truths:
1. Salt Creates Thirst In the ancient world, salt was a vital preservative that stopped decay. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the moral and spiritual preservative in a rotting society. But salt also creates thirst. When we dare to be different—bringing grace to bitterness and integrity to corruption—we make those around us thirsty for the “Living Water.” However, there is a warning: if we blend in and look exactly like the world, we lose our flavor and our effectiveness.
2. Light Invades the Darkness We are not meant to be “emergency flashlights” hidden in a drawer; we are a city set on a hill and a beacon for the lost. Dr. White challenges us to “take the basket off”—to remove the covers of fear, insecurity, and busy schedules that hide our faith. The issue in our world isn’t the amount of darkness, but the amount of light we are willing to release. When you walk into a room, the atmosphere should change because the light of Jesus radiates from within you.
3. Our Works Point to the Father Our good works are the “advertisement” for the Kingdom of God. Whether it is feeding the hungry, showing kindness to someone who treats us poorly, or serving our families without complaint, these actions open hearts. People may not read the Bible, but they read our lives. When we live with authenticity and joy, others won’t ultimately praise us; they will look past us and see that our God is truly great.
Living it Out This week, we are challenged to be intentional:
- Be Salt: Bring peace to a chaotic conversation.
- Remove the Basket: Share your hope when others ask.
- Do Tangible Good: Fill a need in your community without expecting anything in return.
Don’t just post about it; live it out. Let your life be the evidence that the Holy Spirit is still working on earth.
