Shazam–or Not! – August 4th, 2024

Dr. Rob White - August 4, 2024

Shazam--or Not!

God answers our prayers––not necessarily with a sudden SHAAA-ZAM kind of miracle––but often by shepherding us with little nudges over a period of time––until we suddenly look around and realize that we are just where we need to be.

In a world where instant solutions are often sought, the sermon “Shazam or Not” by Dr. Rob White of Athens Universal Life Church offers a profound reflection on faith and patience. This sermon explores how God answers prayers not with instant miracles but with gradual guidance, steering us toward spiritual growth.

The Foundation: Luke 17:5-10

The sermon draws its inspiration from Luke 17:5-10, where the apostles ask Jesus, “Increase our faith.” In response, Jesus emphasizes the power of even the smallest amount of faith, likening it to a mustard seed capable of moving a mulberry tree. However, instead of offering a magical solution, Jesus underscores the significance of consistent, faithful action.

The Reality of Faith

Dr. White eloquently describes the discomfort and challenge of embracing faith, pointing out that the disciples’ plea for increased faith reflects their recognition of the demands placed upon them. They sought strength to fulfill these expectations, not through miraculous intervention but through daily acts of faithfulness.

The Path of Transformation

Through the teachings of scholars like Joel Green and Craig Evans, the sermon delves into how Jesus cultivated the faith of His disciples. Rather than an immediate transformation, Jesus nurtured their faith over time, through teaching, example, and the provision of the Holy Spirit. This approach led to the disciples becoming faith-giants, capable of proclaiming the Good News with boldness.

Patience in Prayer

Dr. White draws parallels between the disciples’ journey and our own experiences, emphasizing that true transformation is rarely instantaneous. Like a parent’s nurturing of a child or a missionary enduring hardship, faith develops over time through small, intentional actions. He recounts the story of Judy Hyland, a missionary imprisoned during World War II, whose faith and perseverance eventually led to freedom. Her story serves as a poignant reminder that God’s timing is perfect, even when answers seem delayed.

A Call to Action

The sermon concludes with a call to action, urging believers to engage in acts of love, service, and community. By embracing Jesus’ teachings and taking incremental steps, individuals can become instruments of change in their families, communities, and the world. Dr. White’s words inspire listeners to remain steadfast in prayer, trusting that God will bring about transformation in His perfect time.

A Prayer for Increased Faith

“Lord, increase our faith” is more than a prayer; it is a commitment to journey alongside Christ, allowing Him to shape us into faith-filled individuals. Through patience and perseverance, we are called to witness the miracles of transformation that God unfolds in our lives.
