0:00

Scripture: Matthew 21:9 (NIV) – “The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!'”

Devotion:

Palm Sunday marks the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, an event filled with anticipation, excitement, and praise. Matthew 21:9 captures the scene as the crowds welcomed Jesus with shouts of “Hosanna!” and expressions of adoration. As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we are reminded of the joyous response that Jesus elicits from those who recognize him as their King and Savior.

“The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!'” The people’s proclamation of “Hosanna” reflects their recognition of Jesus as the promised Messiah, the Son of David. They acknowledge him as their long-awaited King, the one who comes in the name of the Lord to bring salvation and deliverance.

“‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'” This declaration echoes Psalm 118:26, a Messianic prophecy that finds its fulfillment in Jesus. The crowds recognize Jesus as the one sent by God, blessed and anointed to fulfill God’s redemptive purposes.

“‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!'” The word “Hosanna” means “save, we pray” or “save now,” expressing a plea for deliverance and salvation. The people’s cry reflects their longing for liberation from oppression and their hope in Jesus as the one who brings freedom and restoration.

As we commemorate Palm Sunday, let us join our voices with the crowds in praising Jesus as our King and Savior. Let us welcome him into our hearts and lives with joy and adoration, acknowledging his lordship and sovereignty. And let us recommit ourselves to following him faithfully, knowing that he alone has the power to save and transform us.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, our King and Savior. On this Palm Sunday, we join our voices with the crowds in proclaiming “Hosanna!” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! May we welcome Jesus into our lives with joy and adoration, acknowledging him as our Lord and Savior. In his name, we pray. Amen.
