Have you ever looked up at a beautiful stained glass window in a church? The vibrant colors and glowing light are breathtaking. But the process of creating that art is difficult, dangerous, and requires breaking glass into exact pieces. In the sermon “A Worm’s Eye View,” this beautiful metaphor is used to illustrate the challenging, yet rewarding journey of Christian discipleship. Just as light gleams through the broken glass, God’s light shines through our lives when we embrace the difficult path of following Jesus.
The sermon centers on Mark 8:31-38, a pivotal moment in the Gospel. Right after Peter correctly identifies Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus predicts His own suffering and death. Shocked, Peter takes Jesus aside to rebuke Him. Peter was looking at the situation from a “worm’s-eye view”—a limited, human perspective focused on worldly success and self-preservation. Jesus, however, was operating from a “God’s-eye view.” He sharply rebukes Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s!”
Today, we often struggle with this same shift in perspective. We want a comfortable, domesticated Jesus who offers easy solutions and guarantees worldly success. Our culture tells us to “look out for number one” and preserve our lives at all costs. Yet, Jesus issues a radical call: “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.”
Taking up our cross doesn’t necessarily mean facing physical martyrdom, though for many Christians worldwide, it does. For most of us, it means dying to our selfish ambitions, sacrificing our time and resources for others, and standing firm in our faith when it’s unpopular. It means choosing spiritual discipline over worldly comfort. While the world says there is nothing worth dying for, Jesus shows us that losing our life for His sake and the Gospel is the only way to truly save it.
Ultimately, “A Worm’s Eye View” challenges us to stop looking at life from the ground up and start seeing it from heaven down. When we exchange our limited human perspective for God’s eternal viewpoint, the sacrifices we make become the very pieces that allow His brilliant light to shine through us to a broken world.
A Worms Eye View – March 24th, 2019
It is difficult to understand Jesus, because he asks us to exchange our worm’s-eye view for a God’s-eye view.
